Larry and Dee are third and fourth generation ranchers. In 1996, Larry and Dee started buying their first Angus females, which are the base of the Coleman Angus Ranch cowherd today.

As Larry grew up, he enjoyed taking steers to the county fairs. As a sophomore in high school, Larry had a steer that he thought really had a chance of winning Grand Champion. McDonald’s typically bought the Grand or Reserve Champion Steer, so Larry named his steer “Big Mac.” The steer won and as you guessed it, McDonald’s bought him! The money he earned was enough to make a down payment on 80 acres and a home, which is the current homestead.

Both Larry and Dee knew there were many extremely successful ranches in Montana that had been there for a long time, and they decided that the only way they might be able to make it work was to identify the very best females they could and build around them. That is probably why they are so focused even today on the Momma cow, as they learned very quickly how much impact a great female could have on a cow herd. Larry and Dee didn’t know if they could ever sell bulls but felt if they focused extremely hard on the Maternal end of it, they could build a Maternal herd.

Larry and Dee started with three donors and 10 commercial recip. cows and began marketing their cattle through places such as the NILE and the female sale at Columbus, Montana. They started selling their bulls through private treaty sales for the first few years, then had their first annual bull sale in February 2005 with 45 bulls selling; this past year, in 2026, they sold 116. Their first female sale was held in October 2004, and they have had an annual female sale in October every year since. Coleman Angus Ranch is a family run operation. Everyone in the family is involved daily including their two children, 23-year-old Erica and Dawson. Larry and Dee truly believe they are most fortunate to have had the opportunity to raise their children in this lifestyle.

In July 2026, Larry and Dee Coleman began a new chapter in their lives as Orrin Ingram purchased Coleman Angus. This transition marks an exciting expansion of Orrin Ingram's commitment to providing both seedstock and commercial cattle producers with the highest-quality Angus genetics available. Guided by a passion for excellence and a vision for the future, Orrin is dedicated to building on the strong foundation established by the Coleman family. As Orrin says, "One dream of mine is to have the best Angus cattle in my lifetime I can have."

Currently, Coleman Angus holds their annual bull sale the third Tuesday in February and their annual female sale the second Tuesday in October at our ranch in Charlo. Typically, they sell around 180 bulls with 110 being 18-month-old bulls and about 70 yearlings. They also have two monthly online embryo sales.
